South Jakarta Administration Uses 'Jacking' Method to Tackle Karang Tengah-Lebak Bulus Flooding

The South Jakarta City Administration is building a drainage channel using the jacking method along Jalan Karang Tengah Raya, Lebak Bulus, Cilandak.

South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo said the technology was selected by the Water Resources Agency because the existing channel is no longer adequate to accommodate rainwater runoff.

He explained that the application of jacking technology is the most effective solution because it can be carried out without having to tear up the entire road surface openly.

“This project is planned to last for six months. With the jacking method, we hope that areas that are usually inundated, from Karang Tengah to the Adhyaksa area, can be minimised or even eliminated, because the final outlet leads to the Pesanggrahan River,” he told reporters on Tuesday (18/8).

Syafrin explained that the installation of the underground channel has a depth starting from 7 metres. Meanwhile, from the upstream point it reaches 9 to 12 metres down to the downstream point.

Therefore, he urged the public to comply with the traffic management that has been put in place by the relevant parties on the ground.

“We hope this improvement effort can overcome flooding problems in the future. So, please obey the existing traffic signs and follow the directions of officers in the field,” he said.

On the same occasion, the Head of the South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-agency, Santo, explained that the jacking pipe installation is targeted for completion in early December. This channel, he said, will use pipes with a diameter of 1.2 metres along 1,298 metres.

He said this step was taken to address the inundation points that often hit the area during the rainy season, starting from the PHB Pertanian intersection, Kompleks DKI, Kompleks Bona Indah, to the Adhyaksa area.

“The volume of work is almost 1,300 metres from PHB Pertanian to PHB Adhyaksa. The current work is at Pit 1 out of a total of 10 pits to be made. The storage capacity at PHB Adhyaksa itself is already large enough to receive flow from upstream,” he said.

Finally, Santo also apologised for the inconvenience and traffic disruption arising around the project site.

“Residents and road users are urged to comply with the traffic management, follow the instructions of officers in the field, and obey the signs installed for the sake of mutual safety until the project is completed,” he concluded.
