South Jakarta Administration to Provide Four Segregated Waste Bins in Every Neighbourhood Unit

The South Jakarta Environmental Sub-Department (Sudin LH) is preparing four segregated waste bins in every neighbourhood unit (RT) as part of efforts to support the waste separation programme at the source. “We are preparing four bins as collection points in each RT. The placement of the bins will later be determined by the RT head in a location easily accessible to residents,” said Head of the South Jakarta Environmental Sub-Department, Rizky Febriyanto, during a Regional Coordination Meeting at the South Jakarta Mayor’s Office on Thursday. Rizky stated that waste which has been separated from households is expected to remain segregated until the collection process by waste cart officers. Furthermore, his team has also requested and educated waste cart officers not to mix the waste that has already been separated. “The organic waste that has been sorted and collected in special containers is then taken to the nearest collection point or processing facilities such as modern teba or jumbo biopores that are available,” he said. Moreover, if these facilities are full, the separated organic waste can be taken to the nearest temporary disposal site (TPS). At the TPS, his team provides special containers in the form of 660-litre dustbins, the number of which will be adjusted according to the volume of waste generated at the location. According to Rizky, the provision of segregated bins and dustbins at TPS aims to give the public certainty that waste which has been separated will not be mixed again during the management process. “Later, excess waste will be taken to further processing facilities while maintaining its segregation. We are striving to uphold this commitment to prevent disappointment among residents who have made the effort to separate waste at home,” he said. As such, the programme is part of the South Jakarta City Administration’s efforts to improve waste management based on source separation while encouraging public participation in reducing waste. As previously informed, the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Plant (TPST) will only accept residual waste starting from 1 August 2026, thus residents are encouraged to get accustomed to separating waste from home. Therefore, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has prepared a roadmap towards ending the practice of open dumping at TPST Bantargebang, one of which is through the household waste separation movement.
