South Jakarta Administration Plants Onions and Corn Across 187 Locations

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The South Jakarta Administration has planted shallots and maize simultaneously at 187 locations to bolster food security whilst making use of productive land.

“Unused land can become food production spaces that provide real benefits for families and the surrounding environment,” said South Jakarta Mayor Syafrin Liputo at the Ragunan Agro-Education Tourism (AEW) site in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He said food security is one of the important foundations for building a resilient and prosperous society.

According to him, amid the challenges of climate change, limited land, and the shifting food needs of urban communities, innovation is needed to turn every available space into productive land.

“I extend my appreciation to the South Jakarta Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Sub-Department, TP PKK (Family Empowerment and Welfare Mobilisation Team), urban farming groups, and all other parties who have shown commitment and a spirit of mutual cooperation in making this activity a success,” said Syafrin.

He also expressed hope that the activity would not be merely ceremonial, but would also cultivate a spirit of planting within the community.

The collaboration that has been built, he said, must continue to be nurtured and enhanced to realise a South Jakarta that is increasingly advanced, sustainable, and resilient in supporting food security.

“The public’s enthusiasm in taking part in this activity is proof that efforts to build food security can be carried out collaboratively, from the family level up to the city level,” said Azizah.

She therefore invited all PKK cadres, RPTRA managers, urban farming activists, and the wider community to jointly make the simultaneous planting activity a success.

“Especially for RPTRA managers, I will monitor and see for myself how our shallot and maize plants develop later on,” Azizah added.

On the same occasion, Head of the South Jakarta Food Security, Marine and Agriculture Sub-Department Ridho Sosro added that the activity involved planting around 325 kilogrammes of shallot bulbs, 17,500 sweet maize seeds, and 4,000 glutinous maize seeds.

“Through this effort, we hope to foster a culture of planting in communities, improve the availability of food for families, increase productive urban farming areas, and grow public awareness that food security is a shared responsibility,” Ridho concluded.
