South Jakarta Administration Plans Pedestrian Bridge at Ferry Site; Residents React
The South Jakarta Administration plans to build a pedestrian crossing (JPO) over the Pesanggrahan River, at the current location of the ‘eretan’ or ‘getek’ ferry service. Several residents stated that the construction of the bridge would not be an issue, but they requested that it be built at a different location from the ferry’s current spot.
Observations at the site on Thursday (3/9/2026) showed the ferry operating as usual, located directly opposite MTsN 13 Jakarta. Several children and residents were seen using the stairs alongside the river to access the ferry, with some paying a small fee and others simply offering thanks.
Tatang (27), a ferry operator, noted that the Mayor of South Jakarta, Syafrin Liputo, had previously inspected the site to review the proposed bridge construction. “If possible, please do not build it right here, Bang. Build it above or elsewhere. Because if it is built directly here, this service will definitely have to stop. How will residents move? It would be a pity. But if it is built above or below, this can continue to operate. The bridge will be finished, and we will have bridge access,” Tatang said when interviewed at the location.
Tatang admitted he is worried that the construction might lead to the termination of his ferry operations. However, he stated he would accept the situation if the local government guaranteed him new employment following the project.
Tatang also mentioned that local residents do not mind if the ferry continues to operate, though he is prepared to follow regulations if the service is prohibited.
Meanwhile, Nining, a resident picking up her child via the ferry, stated that the service is essential for local mobility and does not want it to be discontinued. “It serves as a shortcut. If we go the long way, it takes too much time. From here, it is fast; we don’t have to take a long detour,” Nining said.
While she supports the construction of the pedestrian bridge to connect Ulujami and North Kebayoran Lama, she insists the ferry service must remain. “I agree with the JPO. But please, do not stop the ferry operations. It has been convenient like this for a long time,” she added.
Another resident, Mama Zahra, said the ferry is her primary means of picking up her child. She believes an alternative solution must be found for the ferry service if the bridge is built. “We use it every single day. If we have to take the long way, it is a hassle. If there is a JPO, there must be a solution for this ferry,” said Mama Zahra.
Previously, the Mayor of South Jakarta, Syafrin Liputo, inspected the ferry and flood-prone residential areas along the Pesanggrahan River in Ulujami, Pesanggrahan District. This was in response to community complaints regarding flood risks and the lack of crossing facilities, which currently rely solely on the ferry.
“To that end, the South Jakarta Administration plans to undertake infrastructure development in the form of a pedestrian crossing (JPO) by the South Jakarta Road Works Sub-department (Suku Dinas Bina Marga),” Syafrin stated in a briefing on Sunday (30/8).
He added that the bridge, connecting Ulujami and North Kebayoran Lama, would provide safety and comfort for residents crossing the river. Furthermore, to anticipate flooding in the area, the South Jakarta Water Resources Sub-department (Sudin SDA) will clean and dredge the Pesanggrahan River to minimise the potential for water accumulation.
