Rising prices of plastic packaging are beginning to impact meat and vegetable vendors. They are anxious because the increase in plastic prices affects their income. One such vendor is Kamil, a chicken meat seller at Kramat Jati Market in East Jakarta, who is starting to worry about the rising plastic prices, although he has not yet been forced to increase the selling price of chicken meat. “Yes, since the price of plastic bags has become more expensive, I’m a bit anxious because when buying chicken meat, plastic is definitely needed. Sometimes people ask for more plastic,” said Kamil when met by CNBC Indonesia on Monday (6/4/2026). This makes him feel burdened by the rise in plastic prices. The reason is that the increase in plastic prices has caused the cost of buying plastic to swell; previously, the cost to buy plastic was Rp30,000, but now he has to dig deeper into his pocket up to Rp60,000. “Actually, the rise in plastic prices has quite an impact, but we still have to buy it because customers need it,” he continued. Kamil also does not want to raise his chicken meat price because it is already quite expensive at Rp50,000 per bird. “If it’s said that later the effect will be to raise the chicken price, no, it’s already expensive now, still Rp50,000 per bird. This has not gone down since Ramadan; if we raise it again, customers will run away,” he explained. Similarly, Marni, a vegetable seller at Kramat Jati Market, is now starting to limit customers from requesting extra plastic for free. “Yes, since the price has risen, buying plastic has become more expensive, so if someone asks for extra plastic, we no longer give it,” said Marni. She still provides extra plastic for free but limits it to two per customer, so if a customer requests additional plastic, she charges an extra fee of Rp500. “We limit it to one extra plastic per customer. If more than that, there’s an additional fee of Rp500,” she clarified.
