Sorong - The government of Sorong Selatan Regency (Pemkab Sorsel) in West Papua Province has proposed several development and revitalisation programmes for transmigration areas to the Ministry of Transmigration to improve community welfare in the region. Sorong Selatan Regent Petronela Krenak said in Sorong on Saturday that the proposal is a crucial step to ensure the welfare of the local community is guaranteed. ‘We have submitted the proposal to the Minister of Transmigration in Jakarta on 25 May 2026, facilitated by Democratic Party faction member of the House of Representatives, Faujia Helga Br. Tampubolon,’ she said. ‘We are grateful that the Minister of Transmigration has welcomed our proposal. There are several programmes we have suggested for the transmigration community in Sorong Selatan Regency,’ Petronela said. According to her, the transmigration areas in Moswaren District and Wayer Village in Wayer District still require infrastructure development and basic service facilities to support community activities. ‘Therefore, we have proposed priority programmes including the revitalisation of places of worship, both churches and mosques, construction and rehabilitation of schools, community halls, local roads, and irrigation networks to support the agricultural sector,’ she added. ‘For example, in Wayer Village, the community still requires electricity services. This has also been communicated to the Minister of Transmigration for central government attention,’ she said. Petronela explained that the proposal is currently in the submission stage, with supporting data being prepared as required by the Ministry of Transmigration. She added that if all requirements are met according to regulations, Sorong Selatan Regency has the opportunity to receive development funding from the central government. She added that the proposed programmes will involve inter-ministerial coordination. ‘The Ministry of Transmigration will coordinate with relevant technical ministries, including the Ministry of Public Works for road and irrigation construction, and ministries overseeing the agricultural sector to support transmigration area development,’ she said. Petronela said the Minister of Transmigration has also indicated plans for an official visit to West Papua Province in the near future. One of the visit’s agenda is planned to take place in Raja Ampat Regency before proceeding to Sorong City. ‘We hope the visit will provide the central government with an opportunity to see firsthand the conditions and needs of transmigration communities in West Papua, particularly in Sorong Selatan,’ she added. Petronela also expressed appreciation to House of Representatives Commission V member Faujia Helga Br. Tampubolon for facilitating the meeting between the Sorong Selatan Regency Government and the Minister of Transmigration. She said the support demonstrates the commitment of people’s representatives from the West Papua electoral district to advocate for accelerated development in the region. For her, this is a crucial step in advocating for the community’s development needs in Sorong Selatan.
