Sorong City Government Optimises Climate Village Programme to Create Sustainable Environment
The Sorong City Government, Southwest Papua, is optimising the implementation of the Climate Village Programme (Proklim) as an effort to increase community capacity in facing climate change, while simultaneously realising a clean, green, healthy, and sustainable environment.
Angelia J Wermasubun, Head of the Department of Environmental Protection and Management (DPPLH) in Sorong, stated on Thursday that the optimisation of Proklim is part of the adaptation and mitigation efforts for climate change at the sub-district level, supporting the broader programmes of the Sorong City Government.
According to her, the implementation of Proklim is also directed towards supporting the reduction of stunting and malnutrition rates by creating a healthy environment and ensuring the availability of clean water sources for the community.
“This programme is expected to be able to increase public awareness in protecting the environment while strengthening resilience against the impacts of climate change,” she said.
The Acting Regional Secretary of Sorong City, Ruddy R Laku, noted that the implementation of Proklim serves as a concrete step by the government in building community concern for environmental preservation.
“I invite all layers of society, especially the younger generation, to play an active role in maintaining environmental sustainability through tree planting, waste management, energy and water conservation, and reducing the use of single-use plastics,” he said.
He added that the success of the climate village programme requires synergy between the government, the education sector, and the community to ensure that various climate change adaptation and mitigation efforts can run sustainably.
He expressed hope that through the implementation of Proklim, the collective commitment to realising Sorong as a green, clean, healthy, and sustainable city will be further strengthened.
