Sony to Reboot Entire Spider-Man Universe After String of Failures
Sony Pictures has finally taken decisive action regarding the future of its film franchise. After a series of commercial failures and harsh criticism, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) Chairman and CEO, Tom Rothman, confirmed a complete reboot with new faces both in front of and behind the camera.
Initially, Sony appeared confident after the Venom trilogy achieved success with revenues reaching US$850 million, which was considered proof that the Spider-Man franchise could succeed even without the presence of the main character. However, a number of other supporting films showed the opposite results.
The successive failures of Morbius (2022), which grossed US$162 million, Madame Web (2024) with US$100 million, and Kraven the Hunter (2024), which only earned US$60 million, were far below the production costs of US$100 million.
Characters like Morbius or Madame Web proved to lack sufficient appeal to carry an entire film without the strong “glue” of Spider-Man himself.
In an interview, Tom Rothman assured that the live-action Spider-Man universe is not dead, but will soon receive a “new breath.” Rothman explicitly confirmed that future projects will be a fresh reboot with new talent. This implicitly signals the end of the journey for actors such as Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, and Dakota Johnson in this universe.
One of the interesting points emphasized by Rothman is the strategy of “scarcity.” According to him, Sony needs to make audiences miss their characters again.
“Scarcity has value… You have to make the audience miss you,” he said. This suggests that Sony will be more selective and no longer excessively release supporting character films every year.
Critics argue that the key to the success of this reboot is to bring a real Spider-Man figure into the universe. Whether it’s a new Peter Parker version, or bringing Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy to the live-action realm, the presence of the main hero is considered the only way to reunite the fragmented characters.
