Sony has officially announced that it will raise prices for its flagship PlayStation 5 console range for the second time in less than a year. The company is taking this step due to “pressures in the increasingly uncertain global economic landscape”.

This price increase is scheduled to take effect from 2 April onwards. In the United States, the PS5 Disc edition will surge from US$549.99 (Rp9.34 million) to US$649.99 (Rp11.04 million), a US$100 (Rp1.69 million) increase since the last adjustment last year. The Digital edition will also rise by US$100 to US$599.99 (Rp10.19 million).

Meanwhile, the most powerful PS5 Pro version is receiving the highest increase of US$150 (Rp2.54 million) to US$899.99 (Rp15.29 million). Supporting devices like the PlayStation Portal are also not spared from the adjustment, rising to US$249.99 (Rp4.24 million) from the previous US$199.99 (Rp3.39 million).

“We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we have determined that this is a necessary step to ensure we can continue to deliver innovative and high-quality gaming experiences to players around the world,” stated Sony in its official blog post.

This difficult decision comes as Sony faces an unprecedented surge in memory component prices. Prices have risen dramatically because current memory manufacturers are prioritising their stocks to meet massive demand from AI data centres, leaving supplies for console devices extremely limited.

Additionally, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are a major trigger. Iran’s recent attack on Qatar’s natural gas export facilities has forced those facilities to shut down. This threatens the global helium supply, where according to US Geological Survey data, Qatar supplies one-third of total global needs. This closure is estimated to cut helium exports by 14%.

Although helium is often known to the public as a balloon-filling gas, this element is crucial in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The scarcity of this gas directly drives up global chip production costs, which ultimately burdens consumers.

This price increase is predicted to hinder video game market growth this year. Sony reported that in the October-December holiday quarter last year, PlayStation 5 sales fell 16% compared to the previous year to 8 million units.

On the other hand, their main competitor, Nintendo, has so far chosen to maintain stable prices for the newly launched Switch 2 console last year. However, this position is considered quite challenging for Nintendo as they must sustain momentum with new user bases amid similar inflation pressures.

In response to this situation, Sony executives stated they will endeavour to dampen production cost impacts by focusing on monetising the existing PS5 user base and expanding revenue from software (games) and network services sectors.

Nevertheless, future challenges remain significant given the potential new wave of inflation from the Middle East conflict, which is predicted to continue exacerbating component prices in the coming period.
