Sonoco starts operations

JAKARTA (JP): Sonoco, of the United States, announced
yesterday that it is beginning operations here to produce both
consumer and industrial packaging products, the managing director
of Sonoco Asia, Perry D. Smith, said in a statement here
Saturday.

Smith said Sonoco Asia and its investment partner PT Istethmar
of Hong Kong have purchased a major interest in PT Tritunggal
Sejahtera, a leading producer of composite cans for snack food
and motor oil.

He added his company will build a new joint venture company
with PT Sarana Kemas Utama.

Terms of the joint venture agreement were not disclosed but it
will operate under the Sonoco name and employ 80 people at its
plant in Jakarta, the statement said.

The new joint venture, Smith said, will cooperate with its
Japanese affiliate, Showa Marutsutsu, to serve many Japanese
companies which are expanding their presence in Indonesia. (04)
