Son of a Sumbawa Farmer Overcomes Repeated Failures to Become Indonesian Navy Officer

The journey to the State Palace was not easy for Zul. He failed several times during the TNI selection process, through both the enlisted and non-commissioned officer routes. However, failure after failure did not make him give up, until he finally completed his education at the Naval Academy and was inaugurated as an officer. “I myself feel very proud, I never imagined I could stand here. I took the test several times, both CATAM and CABA, and I did not pass. I never dreamed of being at this point. It is all thanks to my parents, thanks to their prayers. It is not me who is strong, but my mother’s prayers that are powerful,” Zul said at the State Palace. Amid that gratitude, one message from President Prabowo stuck in his mind during the inauguration briefing and will serve as a firm guide in carrying out his duties as a TNI officer. “What touched my heart the most was the message from Mr Prabowo that soldiers must always protect the people, always serve the nation and state,” he said. Zul is also optimistic that Indonesia can realise the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision through various government programmes currently underway, especially for strengthening food and energy security. He noted that the push for alternative fuels like B50 is one of Indonesia’s stepping stones towards the Golden Indonesia 2045 goal. During his education, the biggest challenge he faced was not physical or academic, but the great distance from his family. However, that sacrifice has been fully rewarded. Zul is now recorded as the first Indonesian Navy officer from his home village.
