Despite repeated roundups, prostitutes flocking certain spots
of the city are still doing their business as usual. During a
recent raid at Taman Pluit Penjaringan, North Jakarta, to resist
detention, the women gave various reasons to the officers. The
following measures need to be taken into consideration: there is
no guarantee that social rehabilitation centers set up to
accommodate these women can stop them from returning to their
line of business. Another alternative would be to send them back
to their respective hometowns after they are rounded up.

The number of their clients are also on the increase over the
past few years, as are readily available obscene VCDs at roadside
stalls.

To make all such efforts a success, the authorities should
nail customers so that the presence of these women can be
reduced. A shop could not survive if there were no customers.
