Some rivers recede in India
INDIA: Some rivers were starting to recede in eastern India after torrential rains killed 176 people nationwide and affected millions of others, officials said.
Water levels in rivers in the eastern Bihar state -- one of the worst affected in India -- were expected to fall next week, India's Central Water Commission said.
Meanwhile, two more people died overnight in Bihar's Samastipur district, bringing the Indian death toll to 176, relief officials said.
Nationwide, some 5 million people have been stranded by heavy rains that have submerged homes and roads, drowned cattle and driven villagers to higher ground since the monsoon season began in mid June. -- AP
