There has been so far no sign of a solution to the Aceh
conflict, which has been going on for quite some time. This may
be caused by the fact that so many societal groups have so many
different viewpoints on how to solve the problem.

The Aceh conflict is a national issue. So, the central
government should be involved in the effort to solve the
conflict. It is in fact a very simple matter. The solution could
also be very simple, provided all concerned are really serious in
putting an end to the prolonged conflict.

First, all members of the political elite in Aceh should unite
and sit around one table to deliberate on steps that need to be
taken to reach a safe and conducive situation. And councilors in
Aceh should be extremely careful in dealing with the development
in their area. They should always work in coordination with the
local authorities in the effort to restore order.

Second, all components in society must not suspect each other.
They should try to make the conflicting groups meet and talk.

Third, they should be sure that laws No 22/1999 and No 25/1999
which are followed up by government regulations are thoroughly
implemented in order to make a concrete step toward developing
Aceh in compliance with societal demands.

I am sure the Acehnese are fed up with their uncertain
situation and unstable life. They should be guaranteed as good a
life as the one enjoyed by their brothers and sisters in other
areas of the country.

Let us hold a dialog to find the best solution to the Aceh
crisis.
