Solo Mayor Ensures WFH Does Not Apply to Public Service Staff
The Mayor of Solo, Respati Ardi, has stated that the work-from-home (WFH) policy for civil servants (ASN) does not apply to employees who provide direct services to the public. Consequently, public service hours will continue to operate normally. “This WFH directive from the central government is for efficiency. But we ensure that WFH does not apply to service-providing employees. Public service hours will not be reduced,” said Respati on Friday, 3 April 2026. The WFH policy every Friday was previously announced by the central government as part of efforts to improve work efficiency and save energy in government agencies. The implementation of this policy will still be adjusted to the service needs in each region. Respati explained that the Solo City Government in Central Java is still awaiting technical guidelines from the central government regarding the implementation of WFH every Friday. He emphasised that the policy will be adjusted without disrupting services to the public. “We are still waiting for technical implementation instructions, even though the announcement from the central government is already there. For WFH every Friday, we will certainly adjust it to the central regulations,” he said. According to Respati, WFH will only be applied to ASN whose work can be done remotely. Meanwhile, structural officials up to the sub-district head level are still required to be present at the office because they are directly involved in public services. “This WFH is a directive from the Central Government for efficiency,” he said. He added that similar policies do not apply to the education and health services sectors. Teaching and learning activities in schools as well as services at community health centres will continue to be conducted face-to-face. “Direct services at community health centres and education in schools will continue normally,” said Respati. Previously, the Solo City Government in Central Java has implemented a work-from-anywhere (WFA) system once a month every Wednesday as part of efforts to improve efficiency and work flexibility. This policy has been running for two months and will continue. “The WFA once a month on Wednesdays that has been in place so far will continue as usual,” he said. Respati also encourages ASN to use public transport, bicycles, or non-motorised vehicles when commuting to work as an energy-saving measure, while reducing the use of official cars. “We continue to encourage bike to work and reduce the use of official cars. This also supports a healthy lifestyle for ASN,” said Respati. With this adjustment, the Solo City Government hopes that ASN remain productive without reducing public services or education. Respati emphasised that work efficiency through WFH and WFA does not mean reducing services, but rather maximising the use of technology and work flexibility for ASN.
