Regional autonomy is society's hope for true development based
on regional needs. Such development certainly should involve
direct public participation in regional policy-making.

This hope will be realized if regional government officials
are prepared to meet with local communities in order to absorb
their aspirations. In this way, local people will give their
support and harmonious relations can be created, so that regional
leaders can foster the spirit of solidarity with their
communities.

In this context, the provincial tours of Jambi Governor
Zulkifli Nurdin are a positive step worthy of imitation. By
touring nearly all villages in Jambi province, local communities
feel closer to their leader and are more able to voice their
needs.
