Solemn Atmosphere at First Tarawih Prayer of Ramadan 2026 at Istiqlal Mosque
Istiqlal Mosque held its first congregational Tarawih prayer of Ramadan 1447 H on Wednesday evening. Worshippers flocked to the mosque to observe the inaugural Tarawih prayer at the national mosque.
Observations at the location on Wednesday (18/2/2026) showed that congregants began filling the mosque at around 6pm Western Indonesian Time. They first performed the Maghrib prayer, followed by the Isha prayer in congregation at 7.40pm.
Worshippers appeared solemn as they observed their prayers at Istiqlal Mosque. They arrived in various attire, with many coming in groups whilst others came alone.
Male congregants were seated on the northern side, whilst female congregants were on the southern side. Worshippers appeared enthusiastic to participate in the first Tarawih prayer at Istiqlal Mosque.
After the Isha prayer, congregants listened to recitations of the Holy Quran, with some also performing the voluntary post-Isha prayer.
At 8.34pm, the Tarawih prayer commenced. The prayer was conducted after Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar delivered a sermon before the congregation.

According to the official Istiqlal Mosque website, the Tarawih prayer at Istiqlal would be conducted in 20 rakaats along with 3 rakaats of Witir prayer. The first imam would lead the Isha prayer and 8 rakaats of Tarawih, whilst the second imam would lead 12 rakaats of Tarawih and 3 rakaats of Witir prayer. Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar was scheduled as the first speaker for the evening.
