Soldiers facing stern action

PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Chief of the regional military command Maj. Gen. Namoeri Anom promised Saturday to take action against soldiers who allegedly tortured a civilian last week.

"I have no tolerance for those found guilty," he was quoted by Antara as saying on Saturday.

The alleged abduction and torture of Jining sparked a massive violent protest in Ngabang on April 7, when one man was shot dead and four others injured.

Namoeri has said the troops acted in self defense after the angry crowd moved to attack the military headquarters in Ngabang.

Namoeri said the convicted officers are being investigated by the local military police and would be brought to the tribunal court "as soon as possible".

The shooting has provoked condemnation from human rights activists. (01)
