Soldier, four rebels killed in Aceh
INDONESIA: Four separatist rebels and a government soldier
have been killed in the latest clashes in Indonesia's troubled
Aceh province, the military said Saturday.
The four Free Aceh Movement guerrillas were killed early
Saturday in a military raid on their hideout in the Gayo Lues
district in southeast Aceh, army spokesman Sujono said.
In a separate incident, a soldier was killed and another
wounded in a clash with rebels at Pereulak in east Aceh on
Friday, said local military chief Ruliansyah Harahap.
"They attacked our base so we had no choice but to confront
them," rebel spokesman Teungku Kafrawi told AFP.
The military on Wednesday said it had killed more than 3,300
rebels since it launched a major campaign to crush a long-running
insurgency in May 2003. Over 200 government soldiers had been
killed and more than 500 wounded, it said. -- AFP
