SOKSI Signs MoU with Ministry of P2MI to Protect Migrant Workers
The Sentral Organisasi Karyawan Swadiri Indonesia (SOKSI) has signed a cooperation agreement through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (P2MI) to support the government in protecting and empowering Indonesian migrant workers (PMI).
Chairman of the SOKSI National Leadership Council Mukhamad Misbakhun stated that the collaboration is part of an effort to build cooperation between community organisations and the government for the sake of PMI, who are known as foreign exchange heroes.
“This is part of building effective communication so that government policies do not cause misunderstandings among the public,” Misbakhun said in a written statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
He expressed hope that SOKSI can contribute to strengthening the dissemination of government programmes in the field of migrant worker protection, while also building a better understanding among the public regarding the various policies the government has implemented.
According to him, President Prabowo Subianto’s vision in the Astacita emphasises that PMI must receive comprehensive protection, improved welfare, and the creation of a highly skilled workforce.
“Of course, the effort to build this bridge of cooperation is so that the public also understands what the government has been doing and does not misinterpret it,” he said. “So, in reality, the majority of Indonesian migrant workers today are already skilled workers and formally employed. This is in line with the President’s directives.”
He argued that migrant workers must be viewed as human beings who need comprehensive protection, and PMI should not be seen merely as an economic commodity. “All stakeholders must be involved in the context of how to prepare migrant workers on the upstream side, supervision, protection, and empowerment when they finish working abroad,” he said.
