Former Communications and Digital Minister Sofyan Djalil paid respects at the funeral home of Latifah Oetama in South Jakarta on Thursday (28 May 2026). Latifah was the wife of Kompas Gramedia founder Jakob Oetama. Djalil, who knew Jakob well, said Latifah, who passed away aged 91, ‘carried out her duties flawlessly and with exemplary conduct’. ‘We younger generations must learn from her and the Oetama family,’ Djalil said after paying respects. He added that whileLatifah was not as prominent as her husband in public, her role in supporting Jakob throughout his life was immense. ‘I feel that Mr Jakob was able to perform his duties so well thanks to the indispensable support of Mrs Bernadetta,’ he said. ‘May her lifetime of service be accepted as a good deed by Almighty God. Rest in peace, Mrs Bernadetta; our prayers are with you, and we will surely follow in time,’ he added. According to Latifah’s children, she made significant sacrifices for the family’s comfort and smooth functioning, including her husband’s. Suharyo, one of Latifah’s children, stated that her good deeds had blessed her with a long life of 91 years. ‘With Mr Jakob Oetama’s role, his sacrifices were considerable. But I believe it was precisely these sacrifices that made life prosperous, embedding values within the family through the mother’s example and inheriting the late father’s legacy,’ he said separately.
