Soekarno Hatta and Halim Airports Reopen Following Krakatau Eruption
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang and Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta have reportedly resumed operations. The official announcement was made by the Ministry of Transport on Tuesday (8/9/2026).
“We inform you that the three affected airports have resumed operations and flight activities can be carried out again in accordance with operational conditions and applicable regulations,” read a statement on the official Instagram account of the Soekarno-Hatta Class I Main Airport Authority Office, @otbansatu.
“For passengers planning to travel, we urge you to recheck flight status and schedules through the airlines’ official channels before heading to the airport,” it added.
“Thank you for your understanding and patience. Safe travels, and enjoy reuniting with your loved ones.”
Earlier, Minister of Transport Dudy Purwagandhi, in a press release received by CNBC Indonesia, also announced the reopening of several airports. This had been carried out since Tuesday at 00.01 WIB.
“As of 8 September at 00.01 WIB, Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Banten, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta and Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung have been declared active again. Budiarto Curug Airport in Banten and Pondok Cabe Airport in Banten also reopened at 02.25 WIB,” he said.
“Meanwhile, Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung and Muhammad Taufiq Kiemas Airport in Lampung are still awaiting further developments,” he added.
To ensure flight safety and security, the airport reopenings come with a number of conditions. First, airport authorities together with airlines must conduct inspections of all aircraft.
Second, pilots and operational flight crew must be aware of the restricted polygon. This refers to polygon-shaped airspace (with many angles) that is restricted or prohibited by the relevant authorities from being crossed because it is detected to contain volcanic ash dispersal.
Volcanic ash dispersal from Mount Anak Krakatau has affected airspace and airport operations since Saturday. As a result, eight airports — namely Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Banten, Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Radin Inten II Airport in Lampung, Husein Sastranegara Airport in Bandung, Budiarto Curug Airport in Banten, Pondok Cabe Airport in Banten, Taufik Kiemas Airport in West Lampung, and Atung Bungsu Airport in Pagar Alam, South Sumatra — experienced operational closures.
“We ask airlines to continue coordinating with airport operators, authorities and relevant agencies to ensure operations can be conducted safely and securely,” Dudy stressed.
