Societal norms

From Pikiran Rakyat

I am an entrepreneur, married and have three children and live
in Sumedang, West Java. I have eight foster children who are
school dropouts. Six of the children are willing to return to
school. The problem is the parents of the children do not
cooperate or are simply ignorant, particularly if their child is
a girl. These parents believe that their girls should not have
formal education. Two of my female foster children wanted to
leave high school even before the first semester finished. Two
years later I was told they were married. I regret this and am
wondering about Indonesian society. Society must be made to know
the importance of formal education.

Many parents like to see their daughters help with their small
businesses instead of getting an education.
