The development of digital technology has brought significant changes to various aspects of life, including how society interacts and shops. One of the most influential innovations is the advent of social media. Platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X, and YouTube not only function as communication tools but have also become an integral part of marketing and consumption activities in modern society.

Whereas consumers previously obtained product information through television advertisements, radio, or recommendations from close acquaintances, that information can now be acquired with just a few taps on a mobile phone screen. This ease of access to information has significantly altered consumer behaviour. Consumers have become more active, critical, and selective in determining their choice of products or services. This shift indicates that social media has become one of the primary factors influencing consumer behaviour in the digital era.

Before making a purchase, most consumers today tend to seek information first via social media. They view user reviews, watch review videos, read customer comments, and compare various available products. This condition shows that social media has become a more trusted source of information compared to conventional advertising. Consumers feel more confident when obtaining information from the experiences of other users, which are perceived as more objective and genuine. Moreover, the various features available on social media allow consumers to obtain information quickly and practically. Within minutes, a person can ascertain the advantages, disadvantages, price, and quality of a product without having to visit a shop in person.

The ease of obtaining information has made modern consumers more critical in their purchasing decisions. They are no longer easily convinced by claims made by companies. Before buying a product, consumers typically conduct simple research by comparing various brands, reading testimonials, and seeking recommendations from other users. Even a single negative review can influence a consumer’s perception of a product. This change presents both a challenge and an opportunity for companies. On one hand, companies must maintain product quality and service to secure a positive image on social media. On the other hand, social media also provides an opportunity for companies to build closer relationships with customers.

Another phenomenon arising from the development of social media is the increasing role of influencers in shaping consumer behaviour. Influencers are individuals who hold sway over their followers through the content they share on social media. Many companies utilise influencers as part of their digital marketing strategy because they are considered capable of boosting consumer trust in a product. When an influencer provides a positive review of a product, their followers tend to be more interested in trying that product. This condition demonstrates that consumer purchasing decisions are influenced not only by product quality but also by recommendations and experiences shared by trusted figures.

Social media also encourages the emergence of impulsive buying behaviour, or purchases made spontaneously without thorough planning. Various marketing strategies such as limited-time discounts, flash sales, live shopping, and exclusive promotions often tempt consumers to buy products they do not actually need. Additionally, the emergence of viral trends on social media frequently creates a desire to follow what is currently popular in society. As a result, many consumers make purchases based not on necessity, but due to the influence of trends and momentary emotional impulses.

In the digital era, the relationship between companies and consumers has become more interactive. Whereas communication was previously one-way through advertising, consumers can now interact directly with companies via comment sections, private messages, and live streaming features. This more open interaction allows companies to better understand customer needs. Conversely, consumers also feel more valued as they can convey opinions, criticisms, and suggestions directly. This change in communication patterns makes social media an important tool for building customer loyalty and increasing consumer satisfaction.

The shift in consumer behaviour due to social media provides various opportunities for business actors. At a relatively lower cost compared to conventional marketing, companies can reach a wider market through various digital platforms. However, companies also face considerable challenges. Competition is increasingly fierce because every business has the same opportunity to promote its products on social media. Furthermore, negative information about a product can spread very rapidly and affect a company’s reputation. Therefore, business actors need to implement digital marketing strategies that are creative, transparent, and oriented towards consumer needs in order to survive in an increasingly competitive landscape.

Social media has brought about a major change in consumer behaviour in the digital era. Its presence not only facilitates access to information but also influences the way consumers search for products, evaluate options, and make purchasing decisions.
