Social Affairs Minister Says Kulon Progo People's School to Receive Hundreds of Students This Year

Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, known as Gus Ipul, inspected the construction site of a People’s School in Kulon Progo on Monday (6/7). He stated that progress on the building has reached 90 per cent and it is targeted for completion within the next two weeks. The school is set to receive hundreds of students this year.

Gus Ipul visited the SR Gulurejo People’s School construction site located in Gulurejo Village, Lendah District, Kulon Progo. During his visit, he said the school could be utilised for teaching and learning activities within a fortnight.

“Alhamdulillah, this permanent building is one of 104 permanent buildings being constructed this year, 2026. The target is that in two weeks we can use it for the teaching and learning process,” Gus Ipul told reporters in Lendah, Kulon Progo, on Monday (6/7/2026).

Gus Ipul explained that the People’s School in Yogyakarta was previously a pilot school still using temporary buildings. The land for the permanent building was provided by the Yogyakarta Special Region Government, while the construction was carried out by the Ministry of Public Works.

“I thank the Ministry of Public Works. In less than six months, they have been able to deliver construction like this. At this site, progress has reached more than 90 per cent. The target is that in two weeks it can be used for the teaching and learning process,” he said.

According to Gus Ipul, this year SR Gulurejo will accept more than 300 students at the primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary levels. In the future, the school’s capacity is targeted to be continuously increased to accommodate up to 1,000 students.

“This year we are accepting more than 300 students at the primary, junior secondary, and senior secondary levels. Of course, it will be increased to 1,000 students for these levels, following the President’s directive,” he stated.

He said the construction of the permanent SR Gulurejo building is part of the government’s effort to expand access to education for the community. Nationally, there are 104 permanent buildings currently under construction this year.

Gus Ipul acknowledged that some projects have not yet been completed due to field constraints, such as the distribution of building materials to project sites. The government, together with the Ministry of Public Works, is continuing to accelerate progress so that all construction can be completed promptly.

“We continue to coordinate with the Ministry of Public Works. On the ground, there are obstacles; in some locations, there are difficulties with building materials because of transportation to the construction sites. But we hope these buildings can be completed more quickly because the students have also been designated,” he concluded.
