Social Affairs Minister Emphasises Accurate Data and Precise Targeting for 'Sekolah Rakyat' Program
The Minister of Social Affairs, Gus Ipul, has emphasised that the ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ (People’s School) programme relies on accurate data and precise targeting to ensure its success. Speaking at the Open House for SRMA 5 Jambi, he noted that the programme serves as a form of presidential affirmation, providing opportunities for children who previously lacked basic literacy and numeracy skills.
He explained that the ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ approach is designed with flexibility through a multi-entry and multi-exit system, accompanied by intensive mentoring and accelerated learning tailored to each student’s talents and interests. Furthermore, Gus Ipul stressed that the programme is a data-based intervention specifically targeting low-income families to ensure their children have access to high-quality educational environments, including boarding facilities and 24-hour supervision.
The ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ programme has been operational at 166 locations across Indonesia since 14 July 2025 and is showing significant growth. Currently, there are nearly 15,000 students nationwide, with 32,000 new students expected this year, bringing the total to 45,000. The Minister projected that the number of students will exceed 100,000 next year and is expected to surpass 400,000 by 2029.
Gus Ipul noted that the increase in student confidence is a key indicator of the programme’s success, describing the participants as ‘the invisible people’ who are now being brought into the spotlight. During the event, demonstrations of adaptive learning methods, such as the use of smartboards for interactive biology lessons, were also showcased.
The Minister also provided an update on the construction of permanent ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ buildings, including progress in Bagan Pete, as part of a larger plan to establish over 100 permanent school sites across Indonesia. He attributed the programme’s progress to the successful collaboration between various ministries, agencies, and local governments.
Jambi Governor Al Haris reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to supporting the programme’s expansion, ensuring that land for new school developments is legally clear and ready for rapid construction. Through data-driven approaches and inclusive education, ‘Sekolah Rakyat’ is intended to serve as a tangible solution to breaking the cycle of poverty.
