The Sumedang Police, West Java, have arrested the suspected perpetrator of the snatching against a Padjadjaran University (Unpad) student, whose initials are GC, which went viral on social media.

The Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Sumedang Police, AKP Tanwin Nopiansah, said that the perpetrator was arrested in the Tanjungsari sub-district on Friday night, May 15, 2026.

“The suspected perpetrator has been secured today in the Tanjungsari area and is currently being taken to the Sumedang Police Headquarters for further examination,” he said.

Previously, the incident occurred in a small alley in Hegarmanah Village, Jatinangor sub-district, on Tuesday night, May 12, and went viral on social media because it was caught on CCTV.

In the CCTV footage, the victim appeared to be running in the alley before falling, and was allegedly run over by the perpetrator’s motorcycle after the victim had been threatened with a sharp weapon while passing through the location.

The panicked victim then tried to escape into a narrow alley and fell, and when the victim shouted for help, the perpetrator allegedly panicked and fled after running over the victim with a motorcycle.

On that occasion, he also asserted that the incident was an attempted robbery, not as narrated in social media.

“This is purely an attempted robbery, not as it went viral on social media,” he said.

He said that investigators had secured a number of pieces of evidence in the form of recordings from 12 CCTV cameras from around the location, as well as a sharp weapon allegedly belonging to the perpetrator and left at the crime scene. (Ant)
