Snapdragon Chip Prices to Rise from September 2026, Android Phones Threatened with Higher Costs

Qualcomm has reportedly informed its customers, primarily Android smartphone manufacturers, that the price of its Snapdragon chipsets will be adjusted for shipments starting after 1 September 2026. The company stated it can no longer absorb the surge in costs from its suppliers, meaning the increased production expenses will now be passed on to device makers. Although no official details on the magnitude of the increase have been released, reports suggest the price of Snapdragon chips could rise by a double-digit percentage. Even a 10 per cent increase would have a significant impact on smartphone manufacturers already facing cost pressures. The price hike is expected to affect not only premium handsets but also mid-range devices using Snapdragon platforms. Manufacturers may be forced to choose between raising retail prices or cutting profit margins to remain competitive. One of the main factors behind the rising production costs is the high demand for artificial intelligence (AI), as technology companies race to build large-scale data centres and AI infrastructure that require massive semiconductor supplies. This has placed strain on the semiconductor supply chain, driving up the cost of various electronic components, including memory and other supporting parts. Qualcomm did not specify which components have seen the largest cost increases but said it has been seeking new suppliers and alternative component sources to mitigate the impact. This is not the first time Qualcomm has raised its premium chipset prices; the Snapdragon 8 Elite, for example, was reported to have seen a price increase of around 30 per cent compared to its predecessor. Amid this trend, rumours suggest Qualcomm is preparing a more affordable variant of its flagship chipset to offer smartphone makers a competitive option for premium devices. If the price increase takes effect in September, consumers could see the next generation of Android smartphones become more expensive, particularly those launching from late 2026 into early 2027.
