Jakarta — State Junior High School (SMPN) 182 in Kalibata, Pancoran, South Jakarta had warned the owner of a boundary wall adjacent to the school to inspect and repair its condition since December 2025, but no action was taken before the wall collapsed on Sunday, 15 February 2026.

“Regarding the notification letter since December, it was from the headmaster who informed the wall or building owner,” said Pancoran Police Chief Kompol Mansur to reporters in Jakarta on Monday.

Earlier, CCTV footage showing the moment the wall collapsed onto SMPN 182’s fence on Sunday, 15 February 2026, went viral on the Instagram account @jakartaselatan24jam.

Mansur said the building owner had likely not had time to repair the wall due to being busy.

Police have not yet examined witnesses as the investigation into whether there was any element of intent is still ongoing.

“Regarding whether or not there is a criminal element, the investigation process is still underway,” he said.

Although there were no injuries or fatalities, the wall collapse caused physical damage to the school.

The school has requested that the wall owner assist in restoring the damaged infrastructure and facilities to their original condition.

“The school is requesting that the structures be returned to their original state. Whatever damage occurred and in whichever rooms, the headmaster is asking for everything to be restored,” he said.

As a result of the incident, drainage channels have become blocked, and the total losses are still being assessed.

Previously, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) stated that the wall collapse beside SMPN 182 in South Jakarta was caused by unstable soil structure.
