Smokers Must Know! The Immediate Dangers of Smoking Right After Breaking Fast
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The habit of smoking immediately after breaking the fast remains common among some people after abstaining throughout the day. The habit can lead to a number of negative health effects.
In an Instagram post from the West Java Health Office, @dinkesjabar, the public is urged not to smoke right after breaking the fast. After a day of fasting, the body is in a state of an empty stomach, making it more vulnerable to exposure to harmful substances from cigarettes.
‘The toxic substances from cigarettes are the first to enter the body when smoking on an empty stomach without prior nutrition or food,’ Dinkes Jabar said in the post cited on Friday (6 March 2026).
Additionally, nicotine in cigarettes can directly affect the brain. When nicotine enters quickly and in large quantities, this condition can trigger nausea and headaches.
Another danger comes from the carbon monoxide content in cigarette smoke. The gas is known to bind haemoglobin in the blood up to around 300 times more strongly than oxygen.
As a result, the circulation of carbon monoxide in the body may increase and cause the body to lack oxygen. This condition certainly has a negative impact on the functioning of bodily organs.
Not only that, cigarette smoke can irritate the respiratory tract, leading to coughing. The West Java Health Office reminds the public to refrain from the habit of smoking immediately when breaking the fast.
‘It’s very dangerous to break the fast and smoke right away. So it’s better to refrain from smoking while breaking the fast; let’s protect our health and observe the worship with full awareness,’ wrote Dinkes Jabar in the post.
