Smoke Source on Green Line KRL Caused by Two Mobile Phones, One Used as Hotspot
The electric train (KRL) service on the Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route (Green Line) was recently disrupted due to the appearance of smoke. KAI Commuter Indonesia (KCI) stated that the smoke originated from a passenger’s mobile phone.
KAI Commuter Public Relations Manager, Leza Arlan, stated that security officers on duty at the platform noticed a passenger’s bag emitting smoke. The passenger subsequently threw the bag onto the platform area.
Once secured by officers, two mobile phone units were found in a burnt condition inside the Commuter Line user’s bag.
“Officers immediately assisted the passenger in exiting the Commuter Line and secured the bag containing the gadgets that were emitting smoke. Officers also advised passengers to remain calm and not panic when exiting the train set,” Leza said in a statement on Thursday (17/09/2026).
The incident involving the burning gadgets occurred inside Commuter Line 1641 on the Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route this morning at approximately 06:49 WIB. The event caused temporary panic among passengers.
The incident involving the two burning phones occurred while the Commuter Line was at Rawa Buntu Station, specifically in the women-only carriage at the front of the train. In circulating videos, the bodies of the phones appeared charred.
Officers subsequently coordinated with the Station Master to obtain information from the passenger whose bag was identified as emitting smoke from the phones. Based on the information obtained, one of the mobile devices was being used as a hotspot, while both devices were inside the bag. KAI Commuter is still managing and coordinating the situation regarding the incident.
Journey Delayed by 7 Minutes
Due to this incident, Commuter Line No. 1641 on the Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route experienced a delay of approximately 7 minutes. After ensuring the train set was safe, Commuter Line No. 1641 resumed its journey.
KAI Commuter reminds all users to always monitor the condition of mobile phones or other electronic devices carried while using the Commuter Line. Devices experiencing overheating, potentially emitting smoke, or showing abnormal conditions should be secured immediately and reported to officers.
“If you encounter any abnormal conditions during your journey, do not panic and report immediately to the officers. Rapid response from users is a vital part of maintaining our collective safety,” concluded Leza.
