Smoke Persists in Tambora Fire Rubble as Firefighters Continue Cooling Operations
Smoke continues to rise from the fire-ravaged building in Tambora, West Jakarta, on Saturday (30 May 2026) afternoon, according to Kompas.com observations at the scene. The white smoke is emerging from behind the rubble of what was previously a clothing manufacturing business, with smouldering embers and leftover fabrics suspected as the cause. Piles of paper remnants are also contributing to the ongoing smoke in the area.
Firefighters are using tools such as crowbars and axes to dismantle the debris piles, while hoses are directed into the rubble to ensure water reaches the base and cools any remaining embers. Joko Susilo, Subsector Head of the Tambora District Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat), confirmed the smoke reports, stating that emergency teams were dispatched immediately after the 11:06 WIB alert and are conducting cooling operations. He explained that the smoke is due to flammable materials from the burnt-down clothing factory, with the West Jakarta Sub-District Fire and Rescue Department (Gulkarmat) deploying three fire trucks and 15 personnel for the operation. Joko emphasised that firefighters will remain on standby around the site to respond swiftly to any further reports of fire from residents.
