Smoke from Putri Cempo Landfill Fire Disrupts Student Learning Activities

Smoke from the fire at the Putri Cempo landfill in Solo, Central Java, is disrupting student learning activities at SD 02 Plesungan, Gondangrejo, Karanganyar Regency. The plumes of smoke, carried by the wind, have made the air quality around the school uncomfortable, directly impacting teaching and learning processes.

On Friday (4/9/2026), several students were seen wearing masks while on the school premises. This measure was taken as a protective step against smoke exposure, which poses a potential risk to respiratory health.

The impact of the Putri Cempo landfill fire is also being felt by the residents of Plesungan Village. Thick smoke has reportedly reached residential areas, causing some residents to suffer from respiratory disturbances, forcing some to temporarily evacuate.

The fire at the Putri Cempo landfill has been ongoing since Wednesday (2/9/2026) and is still being managed. The wind-driven smoke has caused significant impact on the surrounding areas, including educational facilities.

To combat the blaze, the Solo City Government, with assistance from the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) Regional Police, utilised a police helicopter to perform water bombing operations to extinguish the landfill fire, which has been burning for three days.
