SMI Opens Option to Partner with Danantara on Waste-to-Energy Projects
Director of PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI), Reynaldi Hermansjah, has opened the possibility of collaboration with the Danantara Investment Management Agency (BPI) in developing waste-to-energy (WtE) projects in Indonesia.
He stated that such collaboration could potentially be undertaken as part of the company’s efforts to help address the pressing waste management challenges facing various regions across the country.
“I believe it is not out of the question that we could collaborate with Danantara in the context of resolving Indonesia’s waste problem,” said Reynaldi in Jakarta on Monday, 9 March 2026.
However, he emphasised that no specific timelines or projects have yet been agreed upon with Danantara. “We do not yet have a specific target for when, but I believe this sector is certainly something we can work on together with Danantara,” he said.
The WtE programme is a national initiative to convert municipal waste into electrical energy. The programme is designed as a solution to the waste emergency affecting various cities whilst also supporting national energy security. Danantara is targeting the development of WtE projects at 33 locations across Indonesia.
Danantara CEO Roesan Roeslani stated that the company will soon announce the winning bidders for the first phase of waste-to-energy projects in four cities: Denpasar, Bekasi, Bogor, and Yogyakarta. The announcement of project winners is scheduled for March 2026. Following the first phase in these four cities, Danantara also plans to open tenders for WtE projects in nine additional cities in April 2026 or after the Lebaran holiday.
Meanwhile, PT SMI noted that the total value of projects financed as of 2025 reached Rp1.183 trillion. Of this amount, 129 projects are part of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) programme.
Additionally, SMI is offering the PT SMI Retail Infrastructure Bond (ORIS) with an indicative fundraising target of Rp300 billion. This instrument is part of the Sustainable Bonds Public Offering I of PT SMI Phase II for 2026.
