SMI Opens Collaboration Opportunities with Danantara on Waste-to-Energy Projects
Jakarta — PT Sarana Multi Infrastruktur (SMI) has opened the possibility of collaboration with the Danantara Investment Management Body (BPI) in developing waste-to-energy (WtE) projects—converting waste into electrical power—across Indonesia.
SMI President Director Reynaldi Hermansjah stated that such collaboration could potentially form part of the company’s efforts to address the increasingly pressing waste management challenges faced in various regions.
“I believe there is genuine potential for us to collaborate with Danantara in addressing Indonesia’s waste management problems,” Reynaldi said in Jakarta on Monday, 9 March.
However, he emphasised that no specific timeline or projects for joint implementation have yet been identified. “We don’t have a specific target date yet, but I believe this sector is very much an area where we can collaborate with Danantara,” he said.
The WtE programme is a national initiative designed to convert urban waste into electrical energy. The programme is positioned as a solution to the waste crisis affecting multiple cities whilst simultaneously supporting national energy security.
Danantara is targeting WtE project development across 33 locations nationwide.
Danantara CEO Roesan Roeslani announced that the company will shortly announce winning bidders for the first phase of waste-to-energy projects across four cities: Denpasar, Bekasi, Bogor, and Yogyakarta. The announcement of project winners is scheduled for March 2026.
Following the first phase in these four cities, Danantara also plans to open WtE project tenders in nine additional cities in April 2026 or after the Lebaran holiday.
Meanwhile, SMI recorded total project financing of Rp1.183 trillion through 2025. Of this figure, 129 projects represent national strategic projects (PSN).
Additionally, SMI is offering SMI Retail Infrastructure Bonds (ORIS) with an indicative fundraising target of up to Rp300 billion. This instrument forms part of the second phase of SMI’s 2026 Sustainability Bond Offering.
