Small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) activities in Indonesia continued to show positive development in the first half of 2026, amidst economic dynamics and changing market conditions. This is reflected in the increasing number of business owners able to record an increase in turnover throughout the first half of this year.

Results from the Mandiri Business Survey, conducted by the Mandiri Institute involving 1,269 SME owners across Indonesia in June-July 2026, show that 64% of business owners recorded an increase in turnover during the first half of 2026. This proportion is an increase compared to 48% during the same period the previous year.

Head of Mandiri Institute, Andre Simangunsong, stated that the widespread increase in turnover demonstrates the ability of SME players to maintain business performance amidst various challenges. According to him, this condition also reflects that growth opportunities remain open as economic activities continue.

“The increase in the number of SMEs recording a rise in turnover shows that business activities are being maintained. SME players also continue to demonstrate their ability to adapt to market developments to ensure their business sustainability,” Andre said in an official statement on Wednesday (9/9).

Based on business sectors, agriculture was the sector with the highest proportion of business owners recording an increase in turnover, at 74%. This was followed by the transport and logistics sector and construction, which both reached 68%. The same proportion was also recorded in the manufacturing sector.

This development shows that the strengthening of SME performance is not only occurring in sectors directly related to public consumption, but is also supported by productive sectors connected to supply chains and other economic activities.

According to Andre, this condition serves as capital for SME players to maintain business performance in the second half of 2026. Strengthening the business ecosystem and providing support to productive sectors are considered vital to helping business owners capitalise on the available growth opportunities.

“We see that the growth space for SMEs remains open, especially with an increasingly strong business ecosystem. Strengthening productive sectors is also important to maintain business sustainability while opening future growth opportunities,” said Andre.

Entering the second half of 2026, growth opportunities for SMEs are expected to remain open in line with the steady prospects of economic activity. Bank Mandiri is optimistic that an increase in public purchasing power, particularly heading into the fourth quarter of 2026, could provide additional room for business owners to increase their business activities.

Under these conditions, the strengthening of domestic demand and the continuity of economic activity remain crucial factors that can support SME performance until the end of the year.
