Smartphones Are Becoming Obsolete, Xiaomi Founder Already Has Its Replacement

Smartphones face unprecedented challenges from artificial intelligence technology, which is believed capable of replacing current Android and iOS-based mobile devices.

Xiaomi founder Lei Jun shares this perspective, predicting that an artificial intelligence operating system, or AIOS, will emerge in the future.

According to Lei Jun, AIOS will fundamentally transform how smartphones operate and how users interact with devices. This represents a paradigm shift beyond incremental feature improvements, as the operating system will learn and act autonomously rather than simply responding to user commands.

This statement contradicts the prevailing view among many analysts and commentators in recent times, who have argued that smartphone innovation has matured and become stagnant. Lei Jun disagrees with this assessment, maintaining that significant room for advancement exists, though it demands substantial R&D commitment.

Beyond this vision, Lei Jun has also emphasised the importance of integrating AIOS with quality control measures.

To date, AIOS remains a significant technical challenge that has eluded resolution in recent years. Hardware capable of running AI on consumer devices at scale is not yet fully available, and software frameworks remain in developmental stages.
