Small change getting scarce

Small change getting scarce

From Sinar Pagi

Where has all the small change gone? For the past few months, small denominations, in particular Rp 50 and Rp 100 notes and coins, have been hard to come by and seem to have disappeared from circulation.

Given the fact that we need this small change badly for our daily transactions, as a means of payment for transportation fares, we hope that the authorities will take this matter seriously.

Many malls now tend to round prices up (for example, from Rp 1,250 to Rp 1,300) or give customers a candy instead of change. The value of small change may be negligible for the rich, but it is important for the poor.
