SMA Three wins basketball title

JAKARTA (JP): As expected, the highly favored men's and women's teams of SMA Three, both won the Coca-Cola Basket Mania Cup competitions concluded on Thursday at the Senayan Basketball Hall.

The teams from the government-run high school won the Team Play event and the Three-on-Three competition. Its female squad defeated SMA Ragunan 32-26. Their male compatriots beat SMAN 81 11-9 to grab the Three-on-Three category in the final.

Seventeen teams made up of Jakarta high school students took part in the competition, which started on Monday.

Andrew from SMAN 31 went home with the individual Three Point Contest title of the championship organized by the popular soft drink producer. (rsl)

Arkansas are top Hawgs

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Reuter): The Arkansas Razorbacks are here and the First Hawg, President Bill Clinton, will be, too. Big Dawg got sent home, out-pedigreed by Duke, but the Wildcats of Arizona and Gators of Florida have definitely arrived.

This weekend's NCAA Final Four, climax to the 64-team college basketball tournament known as March Madness, features an Arkansas that has expected a championship all season, a Duke here as if by divine right, an Arizona hot to prove its critics wrong and a Florida out to get it right the first time.

Today's first national semifinal game pits Arkansas, 29-3 so far this season and the only regional top seed to survive to the Final Four, against 29-5 Arizona, which was upset in the first round the past two years.

Capitals beat Blackhawks

CHICAGO (Reuter): Keith Jones scored a pair of goals to lead the Washington Capitals to a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Thursday.

Michal Pivonka, Pat Peake and John Slaney each had two assists for the Capitals, who improved to 3-1-2 in their last six games.

Seventh-place Washington moved three points ahead of eighth- place Florida in the Eastern Conference.

Enza sets world sailing record

BREST, France (AFP): Enza New Zealand made the fastest-ever circumnavigation of the globe when it reached here yesterday.

The 92-foot catamaran, skippered by New Zealander Peter Blake and Britain's Robin Knox-Johnston, had left the Isle of Ushant on France's westernmost tip 74 days and 22 hours ago.

Frenchman Bruno Peyron took 79 days six hours 15min 56sec in another catamaran, Commodore Explorer, last year.

Ghana set up grudge match

SOUSSE, Tunisia (Reuter): Ghana and the Ivory Coast are destined to meet in a premature repeat of the last African Nations Cup final following the last matches in the knockout stage of the competition on Thursday.

Ghana beat Senegal 1-0 to finish top of group D and set up a quarter-final clash against the Ivorians, who were surprisingly beaten 1-0 by Zambia earlier in the day.

Ghana, which welcomed back defender Anthony Baffoe and striker Anthony Yeboah from injury, needed a late winner from substitute Prince Polley Opuku to become the only team to complete the qualifying stages with a 100 percent record.

Havelange vows to hang on

ROME (Reuter): FIFA president Joao Havelange has vowed to stay on as head of soccer's ruling body despite rumours of a leadership challenge.

"The competition has begun. I've got a taste for battle and I never give in," 78-year-old Havelange said in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport on Thursday.

"Regarding administration and the running of tournaments, my management has been impeccable. That's why I won't give in," he said, putting moves against him down to personal ambition.

Olazabal leads golf tourney

NEW ORLEANS (UPI): ose Maria Olazabal of Spain tied a course record with a 9-under 63 Wednesday to take the lead after the first round of the d1.2 million Freeport-McMoran Classic.

Olazabal holds a four-stroke advantage over Sam Torrance, who shot a 67.

The Freeport-McMoran Classic is the final event before the Masters and many notable golfers elected not to make the trip to New Orleans. Defending Masters champion Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman, Nick Price and Nick Faldo are among the golfers sitting out this week's event.
