SMA Negeri 2 Brebes Promotes Literacy and Numeracy Culture
SMA Negeri 2 Brebes in Central Java is actively fostering a culture of literacy and numeracy among its students, aiming to develop critical thinking and analytical skills beyond basic reading and arithmetic. The programme has become a daily habit, with students reading and analysing texts provided by teachers on one of the five teaching days each week. Head of SMA Negeri 2 Brebes, Sriningsih, explained that students study the provided texts, identify key points, and submit their work, from which teachers select the best pieces. Sriningsih stated that this literacy programme is highly beneficial for young people, as it builds critical reasoning skills. It also supports students in facing the Academic Ability Test (TKA) and the National Selection Based on Test (SNBT) for university entrance. The daily literacy habit is seen as a way to ease students’ work on test-based questions and entry into higher education. Sriningsih noted that many students have successfully entered state universities through independent, achievement, and civil service pathways. As a result of this literacy culture, 43 books of student work have been published, serving as a source of pride and motivation for both students and teachers.
