Slow disaster handling
Slow disaster handling
From Republika
A recent magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the coast of Sumatra has
claimed lives and caused material losses. According to the latest
news, most settlements on Nias and Simeulue islands were leveled.
In this context, we recall how slow the government was to
respond to the tsunami disaster in Aceh. The question is, will
the government be as slow in delivering aid and rebuilding Nias?
Based on the experiences in Aceh, the government should be
more concerned about the suffering of the people. It seems that
foreign aid arrives to those in need faster than government
assistance.
The government, therefore, is expected to be more proactive in
evacuating disaster victims and rebuilding public infrastructure
and facilities without delay.
