Sleman House Burns 11 Times in Two Days, Prompting Gegana Intervention

A house in Padukuhan Mriyan X, Margomulyo, Sleman has experienced 11 fires over the past two days, causing alarm among residents and prompting intervention by the Gegana unit. The repeated blazes first occurred on Saturday (23 May) evening, destroying several household items.

Owner Mutfiana told journalists on Sunday (24 May 2026): ‘It started Saturday night at midnight. Initially, a cloth caught fire, then it spread to the door frame.’ After the fire was extinguished, it reignited in different areas, burning other belongings. She said the incidents repeated until midday, with 11 occurrences in 26 hours. ‘There were no explosions or sparks—suddenly it just caught fire,’ she added. ‘No injuries, but furniture, sofas, doors, beds, and more have been destroyed.’

Sleman Police Station’s Inafis team and the DIY Regional Police Gegana unit investigated. Kapolsek Seyegan, AKP Pujiono, confirmed the cause was methane gas leaking from a septic tank with non-standard gas drainage pipes. ‘The Gegana investigation found that methane gas escaped from a septic tank with non-compliant drainage pipes, allowing gas to enter the house and ignite,’ he said. The fires had damaged bathroom doors, towels, living room chairs, part of a mattress, and bathroom fabrics.

After further checks until 12:00 WIB, no methane leaks were found. Police advised the homeowner to replace the pipes immediately, as the septic tank also handles waste from chicken slaughter. ‘Gegana recommends dismantling the septic tank and replacing the drainage pipes to meet safety standards, given it is used for both household and chicken slaughter waste,’ he added.
