Sleman Home Experiences 39 Fires in Six Days Due to Methane Leak

Mutfiana, a resident of Seyegan in Sleman, has reported her home experiencing mysterious fires 39 times over six days. The incidents began on Saturday, 23 May, with flames igniting household items such as fabrics, furniture, and mats at 34 different locations. Despite repairs to the septic tank and evacuation of belongings, fires continue to break out due to residual methane gas lingering underground.

The police and Gegana team confirmed the cause as a methane leak from a faulty septic tank. While the family has temporarily relocated to a neighbour’s house, the building—which also functions as a poultry slaughterhouse—is guarded each night. “We’re staying with a neighbour, not wanting to go far. But we must keep watch; if we don’t spot it in time, everything will burn,” Mutfiana said.
