Jakarta, Kompas.com – A simple confession became a turning point in the case of a collision between two Transjakarta buses on the Kebayoran Lama elevated track in South Jakarta. The driver, identified by the initials Y, is now officially a suspect. The Traffic Directorate of the Metro Jaya Police, Chief Commissioner Komaruddin, confirmed the status upgrade. ‘The driver’s status is that he is already a suspect,’ Komaruddin told Kompas.com on Wednesday (4 March 2026). Nevertheless, Y was not detained. The legal process is ongoing. The incident occurred on Monday, 23 February 2026. Two Transjakarta buses were involved in a head-on collision on the Kebayoran Lama elevated route. The bus driven by Y was travelling from Cipulir Stop towards Seskoal Stop. In a bend, the fleet encountered another bus coming from the opposite direction driven by AS. The collision was unavoidable. In front of investigators, Y admitted he had fallen asleep at the wheel. That admission subsequently formed a key part of the legal proceedings. ‘Y admitted to sleeping at the wheel, causing his vehicle to veer into the oncoming lane, resulting in a head-on collision,’ said Ojo. As a result, 24 passengers sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Asih Ciledug Hospital and Mulya Slipi Hospital. For his actions, Y faces charges under Article 310 paragraph (2) of Law No. 22 of 2009 on Traffic and Road Transport. He faces up to one year in prison and/or a fine of Rp 2,000,000 for causing minor injuries and damage to vehicles. In the dedicated lane that carries thousands daily, a single moment of sleep changed many things.
