SKK Migas and Conrad Asia Energy have held a ceremony marking the commencement of the Final Investment Decision (FID) implementation phase for the development of the Mako gas field. The oil and gas field is operated by West Natuna Exploration Limited (WNEL) and is located in the Duyung Work Area, offshore the Anambas Islands, Riau Islands Province.

SKK Migas Head Djoko Siswanto stated that the initiation of the Mako gas field FID implementation phase represents a strategic step in maintaining the continuity of Indonesia’s national gas supply.

“This investment decision demonstrates the strong commitment of the government and the contractors to accelerate the development of potential gas fields,” Djoko said in a statement on Monday, 2 March 2026.

The Mako gas field is expected to make a significant contribution to national gas production and support domestic energy requirements. Djoko emphasised that SKK Migas will continue to oversee project implementation to ensure it proceeds according to schedule, on time, and within budget.

“Whilst prioritising work safety aspects and compliance with regulations,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chief Executive Officer of Arsari Group, Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo stated that their involvement in the development of the Mako gas field is part of a long-term commitment to support Indonesia’s energy security.

“With extensive and proven experience in the oil and gas sector and solid financial support, we are optimistic that this project can be executed professionally, on schedule, and provide meaningful contributions to state revenues and strengthening Indonesia’s energy resilience,” Hashim said.

The Mako gas field is now part of a strategic investment developed through cooperation between the government, WNEL as operator, and PT Nations Natuna Barat, an entity under Arsari Group that will become the majority rights holder in the Duyung Block.

The Mako project is entering the main phase sequence starting from the Pre-FID phase in 2025 through to the target first gas in November 2027. Activities encompass engineering, procurement, construction, drilling, offshore installation, and commissioning and start-up.

The Mako gas field is estimated to commence production (onstream) in the fourth quarter of 2027, and is expected to provide positive impacts for the sustainability of Indonesia’s upstream oil and gas sector.
