Skincare Tips for the Mudik Journey

The Lebaran mudik journey often causes changes in skincare routines. Long trips, exposure to air conditioning in vehicles, and dust during travel can make the skin drier and more sensitive.

Dermatologist Dr. Arlene Rainamira, Sp.DVE., says that these conditions can affect the skin’s health barrier, the protective layer that helps retain moisture and protects the skin from irritation.

Therefore, skincare still needs attention during the mudik journey so skin does not easily develop problems.

Facial cleansers and body washes should not produce excessive foam and should be low in fragrances and colourants.

“Look for cleansers that do not foam much, do not have many fragrances, and do not contain colourants so they are gentler on the skin,” she said at the Sensatia Ramadan Pure Moments event in Central Jakarta, on Thursday (5/3/2026).

Cleansers that are too harsh can make the skin drier, especially after exposure to hot air and pollution during travel.

Therefore moisturisers are an important step to maintaining skin condition.

Dr. Arlene recommends using moisturiser regularly at least twice daily after washing.

“I often remind that moisturiser should be used at least twice a day, after morning and evening washes,” she explained.

The use of moisturiser is not only important for the face but also for body skin so the skin barrier remains well hydrated.

According to Dr. Arlene, sunscreen should still be used even if one is inside a vehicle.

“Sunscreen is not only for outdoor use. If we are near a window or exposed to light and blue light, that too can affect the skin,” she said.
