Sjafrie Confident Indonesia-Australia Partnership Will Create Regional Peace

Indonesian Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said he was honoured to be in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday (26/8/2026), particularly to attend the 2+2 meeting. According to him, there has been progress in relations between Indonesia and Australia, particularly the Jakarta Agreement in February 2026.

“In the defence sector, Indonesia hopes to advance the implementation of the Agreement, as well as progress on our defence cooperation agreement. This morning, I held a meeting with the Australian Defence Minister regarding our defence relationship, not only for defence relations, but also for inter-state relations between Indonesia and Australia,” Sjafrie said in a press release from the Australian Foreign Ministry.

Sjafrie believes that the defence relationship between the two countries will become closer and stronger in the future. “On that basis, I am confident that our partnership will continue to contribute not only to the security of our two countries, but also to peace and stability in the region that we jointly support,” he said.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the relationship between the two countries is very important and strategic. He also quoted Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s statement about the relationship between Indonesia and Australia, which are destined to be neighbours.

“We are destined to be together, and of course that requires greater cooperation and a stronger relationship between Indonesia and Australia. And I think this meeting mechanism, with the relationship that has been established, and as you mentioned, we talk and discuss things that will apply not only to our bilateral relations but also for future generations,” Sugiono said.
