For the first time in recent months, six Western nations have taken a coordinated step that directly targets the funding and logistical networks behind the surge in Israeli settler violence against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Britain, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway on Tuesday announced sanctions against a number of individuals and organisations accused of financing, facilitating, and encouraging the expansion of illegal settlements as well as attacks on Palestinians.

“Together with our partners from Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, we today imposed new sanctions on those responsible for the escalating colonisation and violence in the West Bank,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said in a social media post.

Citing various international news agencies, the joint move comes amid growing international concern over the surge in settler violence and the acceleration of illegal Jewish settlement construction in the occupied Palestinian territory. The six nations assessed that the situation in the West Bank has reached a level that threatens the viability of the two-state solution, which for decades has been the main diplomatic framework for resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

In a joint statement, the countries not only imposed sanctions but also warned the Israeli government that tougher steps could be taken if Tel Aviv fails to halt settler violence and the expansion of illegal settlements.

Unlike previous sanctions, which were generally aimed at individual settlers, the main target this time was the network of organisations that form the financial and operational backbone of the settlement project.

The British government announced sanctions against six entities and one individual. Among those on the list were organisations said to provide funds, organisational support, and resources for settlement outposts frequently linked to the intimidation of Palestinians.

The names mentioned included The Farms Association, Ahavat Gilad, Artzenu, and Shivat Zion Lerigvey Admata. A fundraiser named Ari Yshag was also sanctioned for allegedly collecting funds for settlement outposts involved in acts of violence and intimidation against Palestinians.

The sanctions imposed include asset freezes, travel bans, and restrictions on business and financial activities. The aim is to cut off the flow of funds that has sustained the expansion of settlements and the activities of radical settler groups.

The decision by the six Western nations did not come suddenly. In recent weeks, the Israeli government once again announced the construction of thousands of new housing units in the West Bank.
