Six to seven trapped after Bekasi train collision
Chief Executive Bobby Rasyidin stated early Tuesday that the victims are still pinned inside the KRL (Commuter Line) carriage, necessitating complex evacuation efforts to reach them safely.
The collision between the commuter train and the intercity service resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries at the West Java station.
Rasyidin said those trapped are confined within damaged compartments, requiring heavy equipment and cutting operations to accelerate rescue efforts and free survivors.
KAI has detached part of the Argo Bromo Anggrek trainset and moved several carriages toward Bekasi to improve access for emergency responders at the crash site.
Rescue teams have been supplying oxygen and emergency aid to trapped victims while awaiting the completion of mechanical evacuation procedures.
Rasyidin added that KAI is intensifying efforts by speeding up cutting operations on obstructing carriage sections to reach victims more quickly.
As of 1 a.m. local time, four people have been confirmed dead—all of whom were KRL passengers directly impacted by the collision.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communications Anne Purba apologized to customers for the tragedy.
“We apologize for this incident. Our current focus is ensuring that all passengers and staff receive the best possible care as quickly and effectively as possible,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) deployed elite personnel from the Basarnas Special Group (BSG) to handle the accident.
The SAR team comprises trained personnel with specialized qualifications and specialized equipment for extractions in land transportation accidents.
Separately, 71 victims are undergoing observation and treatment at several hospitals for injuries sustained in the incident.
KAI stated it is ensuring all injured passengers receive optimal treatment, coordinating closely with medical teams to support their recovery.
The train driver survived, though several crew members and long-distance passengers sustained injuries.
The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by Indonesia’s National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT).
