The Qur’an serves not only as a guide for Islamic believers but also mentions various natural elements, including several types of fruits. Notably, a number of fruits cited in the Qur’an are now known to contain high nutritional content and are frequently categorised as superfoods beneficial for health. Several have been extensively researched for their bodily benefits.

Dates

Dates are the fruit most frequently mentioned in the Qur’an. Several scholars note that this fruit native to the Arabian Peninsula is cited 22 times in the holy book, though in various forms of reference. Surah Al Mu’minun, Chapter 3, Verses 19-20, explicitly mentions dates: “With it We caused to grow for you gardens of date-palms and grapes; therein for you are fruits in abundance, and thereof you eat.”

Dates contain high levels of fibre and antioxidants. Their nutritional benefits support brain health and prevent disease. The three strongest antioxidants in dates are:

  • Flavonoids: Powerful antioxidants that help reduce inflammation and have been studied for potential in reducing the risk of diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and certain cancers.

  • Carotenoids: Proven to boost heart health and may reduce the risk of eye-related disorders such as macular degeneration.

  • Phenolic acid: Known for its anti-inflammatory properties, phenolic acid can help reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease.

Pomegranate

In Surah Ar-Rahman, Verse 68, the Qur’an speaks of two gardens of Paradise, stating: “In both of them will be fruits, and date-palms, and pomegranates.”

Pomegranate is extremely high in vitamin C, which plays a role in collagen formation to maintain muscles, bones, and skin, and is a key player in iron absorption.

Olives

In Surah Al Mu’minun, Verse 20, the Qur’an informs about fruits to be eaten and speaks of the olive tree growing on Mount Sinai that provides oil and seasoning for eating.

Many people choose olive oil as a good fat option. The fruit itself is also excellent as a cooking condiment. Olives also contain essential fatty acids beneficial for heart and brain function, as well as polyphenols which possess antioxidant properties.

Figs

The Qur’an has a specific chapter named Surah At-Tin, meaning “The Fig.” Surah At-Tin, Verse 1, states: “By the fig and the olive.”

Figs are extremely high in fibre, which helps maintain healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Figs also contain magnesium, calcium, potassium, and carotene, all of which the body requires.

According to certified nutritionist Jo Lewin, figs possess at least five health benefits:

  • Improve digestive health

  • Prevent cell damage

  • Normalise blood pressure

  • Improve bone health

  • Help maintain ideal body weight

Grapes

In Surah Al Mu’minun, Chapter 3, Verses 19-20, the Qur’an states: “With it We caused to grow for you gardens of date-palms and grapes; therein for you are fruits in abundance, and thereof you eat.”

Grapes are very popular for their high antioxidant content. Grapes contain flavonoids that have proven beneficial in combating oxidative damage and, according to some research, possess cancer-fighting properties.

Bananas

In Surah Al-Waqiah, Verse 29, Allah mentions bananas as arranged fruit. Surah Al-Waqiah, Verses 27-33, states: “And (for) those who believe and work righteousness, betake themselves, as guests, to gardens and rivers; in a seat of honour, near a Sustainer Most Merciful. (In the Garden of Bliss,) there will be Fruit, and (there will be) things to delight the eye. (Therein are) full-flowing rivers. (There) will be couches (of dignity), raised high. Goblets placed (ready), and cushions set in rows, and rich carpets (all) spread out.”

The Qur’an mentions fruit generally as eaten by those in Paradise, and specifically mentions bananas to inform us that bananas are among blessed fruits. Bananas are an excellent addition to breakfast or morning snacks because they are packed with potassium, fibre, vitamin C, magnesium, and folate.

Bananas also contain several types of powerful antioxidants, including flavonoids and amines. These antioxidants offer numerous health benefits, such as reduced risk of heart disease and degenerative disease.
